Large glacial erratics left over from the Ice Age can be explored at Madison Boulder Woods. This 240-acre preserve protects the forestlands surrounding the Madison Boulder Natural Area, a designated National Natural Landmark and home to the famous "Madison Boulder" - a huge granite rock measuring 83 feet in length, 23 feet in height above the ground, 37 feet in width, and weighing in at upwards of 5,000 tons.

Look for wildflowers and mixed woodlands dominated by hemlock, beech, oak and pine. Visit the abutting Madison Boulder Natural Area to view the famous giant boulder.

• PLEASE NOTE that there is no formal trail system on this preserve; travel at your own risk.
• Leave No Trace—please keep the preserve clean by carrying out your trash (and any that you find).
• No camping or open fires allowed.
• Foot traffic only; horses, bikes and motorized vehicles are prohibited.
• Pets are not permitted; help us protect wildlife on the preserve and be respectful of other hikers by leaving your pets at home.
• Respect the natural world around you! Do not remove or destroy plants, wildlife minerals or cultural items.
Starting from the town hall in the center of Madison, take Route 3 & 113 North (you will pass the Madison Elementary School). At the fire station bear left (you will pass Mooney Hill Road on your right). Travel for approximately 3.7 miles. Take a left onto Boulder Road and follow for approximately 5.2 miles. At this time you should see the preserve sign and parking.
